The grass bag (at 35 litres) is not quite as large as we would like it, but this lawn mower comes at a great price so we believe that evens it out.

You can adjust the cutting height to six settings, between 30mm and 80mm.

The weight of the lawn mowers capable of dealing with large gardens are generally higher than small garden counterparts. The weight of this Black and Decker is 16.2kg.

And with sound reduction techniques to top it off, we believe the Black and Decker Lithium-Ion Lawn Mower is a great model for any large lawn.

This lawn mower has a 32cm cutting width and 5 cutting heights, ranging from 20mm to 60mm.

This is the lightest weight mower at just 10.5 kgs

Our Opinion

Our favourite lawn mower for a small to medium sized garden the Yard Force Lawn Mower.

However for the large lawns out there, the Bosch Advanced Rotak 36-600 is a must have!

Why and how often should you mow the lawn?

Grass needs several things to grow. Sunshine, warmth, water and nutrients in the soil. If these factors are there at the same time, there’s a big chance that your grass will shoot up!

However, on a rainy spell which is cold and cloudy, your grass will stay more or less as it is, as it will in a dry hot spell!

So as a rule of thumb, the more moderate the weather, the longer the grass.

Most people like a nice short neat trimmed lawn. So when the dandilions and daisies are on show, you know it’s time to get the lawn mower out!

How often vs how short - the ⅓ rule

More important than how often you mow your lawn, is how short you mow it.

Manually raise the blades to make sure you don’t cut off more than ⅓ in any one cutting session. Its better to adjust the blade settings on your lawnmower and cut the grass over several weeks, than cutting it too short in one go.

Your grass will go yellow and won’t like you anymore!

Should I take the weight of the lawnmower into consideration?

Lightest manual lawn mowers are around 6.5 kgs

Petrol lawn mowers are heavier.

The Hyundai HYM510SP 4 Stoke Petrol Lawn Mower in our review is a healthy 34 kgs!

It makes sense to decide for yourself how much weight you are comfortable being able to push around your garden.

Or choose a self propelled lawn mower which will do the hard work for you.

You also need to consider being able to put the lawn mower in storage when it’ not in use. If you need to carry it somewhere, you might want to consider a lighter model.

What is the difference between a self propelled and a push lawn mower

A push lawn mower is a smaller lawn mower which needs to be pushed over your lawn.

These are cheaper and really only suitable for small gardens (unless you love a good workout!)

The self propelled lawn mowers make you life easier and all you really need to do is steer the machine.

These are very well suited for large lawns and for steep or uneven lawns.

Should I take the weight of the lawnmower into consideration?

Lawn mowers tend to differ considerately in weight and we believe it is certainly something to take into account before you buy.

As expected the lighter lawn mowers tend to be the ones suitable for smaller gardens. The more the lawn mower can handle, the heavier they tend to become.

The leightest manual lawn mowers start at about 6.5 kgs

Petrol lawn mowers are heavier. The Hyundai HYM510SP 4 Stoke Petrol Lawn Mower in our review is a healthy 34 kgs!

It makes sense to decide for yourself how much weight you are comfortable being able to push around your garden.

Or choose a self propelled lawn mower which will do the hard work for you.

You also need to consider being able to put the lawn mower in storage for when not in use. If you need to carry it somewhere, you might want to consider a lighter model.

What is a mulching lawn mower?

A mulching lawn mower is super handy for 3 reasons, but before we get to that, let me tell you how they work.

When you mow the lawn, the grass is normally collected in a grass bag or box which is attached to the lawn mower. When the bag or box is full you empty it (preferably on a compost heap).

A mulcher on the other hand doesn’t have this box or bag. Instead when you are cutting the lawn, grass is pulled in the machine and cut in very small pieces. These are then released back onto the lawn and no grass is collected at all.

So the first obvious benefit is the time and hassle you save by not having to empty the collection bag.

The second benefit is that (unless you use a compost heap or a garden shredder) you don’t fill up collection trucks with grass which can be composted super easy in your own garden.

The last benefit is that it’s actually good for the health of your lawn!

The Hyundai HYM510SP 4 Stoke Petrol Lawn Mower in our review is a fantastic  mulching lawn mower.

Is the body of lawn mower important?

The body of the lawn mower is called the cutting deck and it is often made of plastic.

Sometimes these could be made from aluminium alloy or steel, but these lawn mowers are more expensive and used for very big gardens or by professional gardeners.

The plastic tends to be very strong and if the mower is stored in a spacious area, it will be sufficient for most people.

The cutting deck of the lawn mower is there to protect you from the blades underneath, so it’s important to look after it and avoid it getting damaged.

What are the best lawn mower brands on the market in 2020

Our review has two Bosch and two Flymo lawn mowers listed.

While we don’t think they are the only brands which make fanstastic lawn mowers, we do think they’re special.

We have also found that different brands are right for different reasons, all depending on what you are expecting from your lawn mower.

Black and Decker has the reputation of quality and durability.

Hyundai is great for petrol engines.

Worx is a great option if you have more powertools from the same brand as the batteries are interchangable.

Flymo lawnmowers are light and perfect for smaller gardens, making it often the first lawnmower of many people. The Flymo lawnmowers are hoover mowers, which create a cushion of air between the lawn mower and the grass, making it very manoeuvreable and  easy to use.

What sort of price should I be looking at?

The price of lawn mowers varies. The prices are based on whether a mower is  wired/wireless, how long the battery life is, and the engine capacity.

We have reviewed many lawn mowers based on their strength and durability compared to their price.

We have found that the cheapest lawn mowers are the manual lawn mowers. These are often under £100.

Then you have the light weight mowers suitable for small gardens. These range from roughly £70 to £250

The more expensive lawn mowers tend to be very good quality and durable. These are the petrol lawn mowers as well as lawn mowers with strong engines and large capacity. These are often £250 and up.

In our opinion the price is not really the only thing you should consider when choosing a lawn mower.

Of course you don’t want to pay more than you should, but often the price is reflected in the quality and dureabilty you receive as well.

So other things to consider are:

Is the lawn mower….

  • wired/cordless
  • a manual or a self propelled mower
  • powered via mains/batteries/petrol
  • comfortable to handle

What is the….

  • power of the engine
  • material of the cutting deck
  • grass bag size
  • brand

Does the lawn mower have….

  • mulching settings
  • accessories
  • guarantees

Decide what is important to you and find the lawn mower which ticks all the boxes for you!
